Taking supplements changed my life...
Or did they? Maybe it was the new company I was keeping that boosted my health.
Here's a guest post from MLM/affiliate software developer/consultant Dennis Wilson.
'Taking supplements changed my life…'
Are you sure? I'm not sure I like hearing this all the time. I think 'supplements changing lives' is one of the biggest myths of MLM!
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they aren't good for your continued well-being; I am sincerely contesting whether it was the supplements that changed your life.
I know I was the absolute supplement basher—didn't believe in them at all and, like many, thought I could get all I needed from what I ate. (Even though I ate way too much junk and didn't even worry about nutrition.)
I now don't believe that any longer—some preliminary (not 'double blind whatever' stuff, just good old Google-ing) research on the issue highlighted the falling nutrient value in the things we eat these days.
So I figure I was the world's best example of someone who should see a dramatic result from taking 'high end' supplements. Having heard the wild stories of all kinds of other folk who had taken supplements with crazy results, I was excited!
Soon after taking them, I noticed my urine had gone yellow. Wow! This was an unmistakable difference, and I thought I was sick! A call to my upline verified this to be natural and normal. I may have noticed more energy—but couldn't be certain because, in addition to taking supplements, I had become more active… walking to the many meetings necessary with my new foray into an MLM company. My normal life is software & consulting, so it's not uncommon for me to not leave my home for days on end, and the only exercise I get is pacing around while talking on the phone.
I noticed over time I started to feel better, and even lose a little weight! Was this the magic supplements? I'm not sure. Because the people I was hanging out with now were far less likely than me to go to McDonald's after a meeting, I found myself eating in healthier restaurants—and choosing salad instead of fries.
Peer pressure? Perhaps. Maybe I was slowly learning about nutrition and better choices through involvement with a health & wellness company.
So did taking supplements really change my life? Maybe, maybe not.
Do I still take them? Yes. I've become conditioned to believe they're worth the risk of better health down the road. I've no conclusive evidence that supports one way of thinking or the other, so I figure $100 a month to take the chance they work is well worth it.
When the truth is good enough, I always wonder why we need to say things like: 'Taking supplements changed my life!' I think the truth is: as much as the supplements themselves, being involved in MLM with a health & wellness company is what changed my life.
The 'do they, don't they; they will, they won't' of nutsups is often a contentious issue—with many folk absolutely convinced one way or t'other. My personal view is 'some do, and some won't'—whilst appropriate nutsups are beneficial (and 'appropriate' is determined by the health of the individual), there's far too much dependence on 'em.
One thing's for sure—they're certainly big business. Myself, I'd like to see a Network Marketing company that auto-shipped me 'decent organic produce and walks in the park on sunny days'—that's something I can really believe in.
